Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. Renell Wren Bengals Jersey . This week, they give a special NHL playoff edition of Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, where the panel gives their Stanley Cup winner prediction. Bruce Arthur, National Post My thumb is up to the Boston Bruins who I think are going to be the 2014 Stanley Cup champions. Remember last season, there was a thought that Claude Julien would get fired if they lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round and jeopardy could extend all the way up to the general managers chair and they did what they did. I think theyre in better shape heading into the playoffs then they were last season, when they had a compressed schedule following the Boston Marathon bombings, they were a tired team in the first round and really, more than anything, they have the easiest road to the Stanley Cup Final of any Stanley Cup contender. I think Bostons ready. Steve Simmons, SUN Media It hurts me to say this just because of the history but Im going thumbs up to the San Jose Sharks, who year in and year out disappoint at this time of year, but I look at this team and all that size up front. The move of Joe Pavelski to left wing has really completed this forward group nicely and I think Marc-Edouard Vlasics play at the Olympics taught him that hes a big-time guy now. He can elevate his game and I think that team, with Todd McLellan coaching, can come out of the west and can beat the Boston Bruins. Theyre too big and theyre too fast. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated My thumb is up to the Chicago Blackhawks because consistency is the hob gobble in little minds and nobody has a littler mind than I do. I picked them at the start of the year, I picked them at the deadline, and Im picking them now because Patrick Kanes going to be back, Jonathan Toews is going to be back, and because the Blackhawks have the best defenceman in the Stanley Cup tournament in Duncan Keith. Dave Hodge, TSN Im going to go through the apparently easy route in the east and say thumbs up to the Presidents Trophy winning Boston Bruins. Sure, they dont win as often as they lose but in this case, this is the best home team in the NHL, lots of playoff experience, theyre obviously good defensively, good goaltending, good special teams and they are reasonably healthy. Then theres that Eastern Conference path to the Stanley Cup Final again, and I think that ends up being the bottom line for my reason to pick Boston. Andy Dalton Youth Jersey .Y. - Urijah Faber walked out on a Madison Square Garden stage in a Wes Welker jersey, the UFCs fun nod to that other "super" show this weekend. Ryan Finley Bengals Jersey . The 31-year-old Spain midfielder hasnt played since Madrid lost in the Copa del Rey final to Atletico Madrid in May due to back and foot injuries. http://www.bengalsrookiestore.com/Bengal...ii-Jersey/ . HEROES P.K. Subban – Scored the overtime winner and assisted on Montreal’s earlier goal, both on the power play, in a 2-1 win over Nashville.(SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia 76ers are still searching for their first home win of the season and will host the Boston Celtics Monday night. The 76ers are 0-12 at Wells Fargo Center this season and opened a three-game homestand with Saturdays 120-115 overtime loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Robert Covington scored 24 points and Hollis Thompson added 21 for Philadelphia, which has dropped three in a row and fell to 2-21 on the season. Tony Wroten scored 17 points off the bench and Michael Carter-Williams ended with a triple-double of 16 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. Grizzlies guard Mike Conley tossed in a 3-pointer as time expired to force overtime. Memphis out-played the Sixers in the extra session to escape with the victory. That is a very cruel loss, Sixers coach Brett Brown said. Ive just seen the end of the game, there are not many regrets. Its a cruel loss for a bunch of young guys that put themselves in a position to get an incredible win. Covington has scored 20 or more points in four of his last five games. A.J. Green Womens Jersey. Philadelphia will close the homestand Friday versus Charlotte. The Celtics are winless in their last four road games and have lost three in a row overall, including Fridays 101-95 setback to the New York Knicks. Jeff Green had 28 points, Tyler Zeller stepped up with 19 and both Evan Turner and Marcus Thornton scored 13 points for Boston, which shot 43.5 percent and committed 18 turnovers for 19 New York points. Were a team that needs every basket we can get. Whether thats one person, two or three people, we need to all play well to win, Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said. Boston is 2-6 on the road and defeated Philadelphia, 101-90, in the City of Brotherly Love on Nov. 19. Brandon Bass scored 23 off the bench and Jared Sullinger added 22 for the Celtics. Wroten scored 21 points in that one for the Sixers, who won three of four meetings with the Celtics a season ago. ' ' '

VERONA, Italy - Torino came from behind to win 3-1 at Hellas Verona in Serie A on Monday and boost its chances of qualifying for Europe. Jim Brown Youth Jersey . Torino moved level on points with Verona and sixth-place Parma, three points behind Inter Milan, which occupies the last Europa League qualifying spot. Verona took the lead 10 minutes from halftime after Cesare Bovo fouled Juanito Gomez and Luca Toni converted the resulting spot kick. Ciro Immobile levelled immediately after the restart with his 13th goal of the season, although there were suspicions of offside. Highly rated midfielder Alessio Cerci put Torino in front with a superb volley from Omar El Kaddouris pass four minutes later. El Kaddouri sealed the match on the hour, slotting Cercis through-ball into the bottom left corner from just outside the area. This is the final meeting of the season between these teams.? The Capitals were 5-4 winners in a shootout Oct.ATLANTA -- Fredi Gonzalez says if you keep putting the ball in play, good things can happen. The good things for Gonzalezs Braves on Monday night were a barrage of Mets errors which handed Atlanta the win. Three errors by New York fueled Atlantas comeback as the Braves scored four runs in the eighth and beat the Mets 5-3 for their fifth straight win. "We were never giving up, never giving any at-bats away," Gonzalez said. "Its the perfect example of putting the ball in play." The error-prone Mets wouldnt let the Braves give up. Errors by reliever Jeurys Familia (1-3), centre fielder Juan Lagares and third baseman Eric Campbell in the eighth helped the Braves rally from a 3-1 deficit. "Weve got to catch the baseball better," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "We didnt catch the baseball tonight." Anthony Varvaro (3-1) pitched one scoreless inning to earn the victory. Craig Kimbrel recorded the final three outs for his 25th save. The Braves announced late in the game that catcher Evan Gattis will be placed on the 15-day disabled list after an MRI revealed a bulging thoracic disk in his back. Curtis Granderson had two hits, including a homer, for the Mets. Trailing 3-1, the Braves loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth against Familia. Following singles by Justin Upton and Jason Heyward, Chris Johnson hit a soft grounder to Familia, who threw low to shortstop Ruben Tejada at second base for an error on what could have been a double play. "I tried to be too quick throwing to the base," Familia said. "It was my fault. Its tough because you work for something and you have a chance to make the double play and you dont make it." Tommy La Stellas single up the middle drove in Upton, and Heyward scored the tying run when Lagares bobbled the ball in centre for another error. With one out, pinch-hitter Ryan Doumits walk loaded the bases again. Campbell, the Mets fill-in third baseman while David Wright sits with a bruised left rotator cuff, bobbled Andrelton Simmons grounder for the third error of the inning, allowing Johnson to score the go-ahead run. Dana Eveland replaced Familia and walked Freddie Freeman, pushing Atlantas lead to two runs. Gattis,, hitting . Sione Takitaki Womens Jersey. .290 with 16 homers and 39 RBIs, missed his fourth straight game on Monday night with what had been called back spasms. He said he was told 95 per cent of similar bulging disks "kind of resolve themselves" without surgery. He said hell have an epidural as early as Tuesday. Rookie Christian Bethancourt, who made his first home start, and veteran Gerald Laird will be Atlantas primary catchers for at least two weeks. New Yorks Zack Wheeler was in position for the win before the Mets eighth-inning collapse. He gave up one run on four hits and five walks in 6 1-3 innings. The Braves were held without a hit until Heyward led off the fourth with a double. The Braves scored one run in the fifth. B.J. Upton, who hit a leadoff single and moved to third on Simmons single, scored on Freemans fly ball to left field. Atlantas Alex Wood allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. He gave up runs in each of the first three innings and then recorded 11 straight outs. Granderson opened the game with his 11th homer. It was his 26th career leadoff homer. Travis dArnauds double drove in Chris Young, who reached on a single, in the second. Youngs flyball drove in Daniel Murphy from third base in the third. Collins successfully challenged a ruling that B.J. Upton stole second base in the third inning. The safe call was overturned following the review, which lasted 1 minute, 15 seconds. Uptons slide easily beat the throw, but the replay showed he was tagged when he bounced off the bag at the end of his pop-up slide. Running from right field, Heyward made a sliding catch in foul territory on Tejadas fly ball to open the fifth. NOTES: Fans with tickets to Tuesday nights game can arrive early, with gates opening at 3:30 p.m., to see the U.S.-Belgium World Cup game on the video board. ... Collins said Wright will avoid the DL, but will remain in New York for rest and treatment during the Braves series. Collins hopes Wright is ready to play Friday when the Mets open a home series against Texas. ... RHP David Carpenter (strained right biceps) is expected to come off the 15-day DL on Wednesday. ... Braves LHP Mike Minor will face Mets RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka in Tuesday nights second game of the series. ' ' '

"[People] keep asking that question and its not a legit question because we dont have that right, we havent arrived yet," Casey responded. "Weve got to take each game at a time, each possession at a time and look at it that way.NEW YORK -- For years and years, a first-round victory by Venus Williams at a major tournament would hardly merit a mention. She is, after all, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion. Shes been the runner-up another seven times. She was ranked No. 1, owns Olympic gold medals, and is second to her younger sister Serena among active women in several key categories, including Grand Slam match wins, with 215. And yet nowadays, at age 33, two years removed from being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that saps energy, hampered much of this season by a bad lower back, and her ranking down to 60th, Williams entered Day 1 at the 2013 U.S. Open having won a total of three matches over the past five Grand Slam tournaments. Plus, she was facing 12th-seeded Kirsten Flipkens, who was a semifinalist at Wimbledon last month and beat Williams on a hard court this month. Looking very much like the player she used to be, Williams smacked serves at up to 120 mph, returned superbly, covered the court well enough to hit a handful of swinging volley winners, and beat Flipkens 6-1, 6-2 Monday to reach the second round at Flushing Meadows. Flipkens, for one, was not surprised in the least to see Williams play that way. To Flipkens, this was not an upset -- no matter what the rankings indicate. "If Venus is there -- if shes fit, if shes focused -- shes a top-10 player," Flipkens said. "Everybody who knows a little bit of the game of tennis can see that. Today, she was like a top-10 player." Williams, who topped the WTA rankings in 2002, hasnt cracked the top 10 since she was No. 9 in March 2011. She hasnt been past the third round at a Grand Slam tournament since a fourth-round exit at Wimbledon later that year. Indeed, Williams lost in the first round in two of her previous four appearances at majors, including at the French Open in May; she sat out Wimbledon for the only time in her career in June. "I stay positive because I know I can play great tennis. Sometimes you just have to go through more than what you want to go through," the American said after winning the first four games and the last four games against Belgiums Flipkens. "Sometimes you have to have losses." Their match was the days second in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and owing perhaps to the early hour -- or the stricter security measures, including new metal detectors, that led to long delays for spectators entering the grounds -- there were thousands of empty blue seats in the 23,000-capacity arena. The place was full for the night session, when Serena Williams began her title defence with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, a performance so thoroughly impressive that her opponent, 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, was prompted in a brief moment of levity to seek comfort by hugging a ball boy. "I dont need a hug in that moment, I need a game," joked Schiavone, who was trailing 6-0, 2-0 at the time. Asked which meant more on this day, her own victory or her sisters, Serena replied: "Theyre equal. I definitely was happy to see Venus win. I really was happy for her. I know shes been working hard. I know she had a tough opponent. For her to come through was just awesome. Obviously, I want to do well, too." The victory over Schiavone lasted exactly an hour, and light rain began falling right after it ended. Eventually, play was called off for the day, postponing 17-time major champion Roger Federers match against 62nd-ranked Grega Zemlja of Slovenia until Tuesday. Rain also ended Canadian Vasek Pospisils match against Brazilian qualifier Rogerio Dutra Silva early. Pospisil left the court leading 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (9), 0-4. Earlier on Ashe, 12-time major champion Rafael Nadal delivered a straightforward, straight-set victory over 21-year-old American Ryan Harrison, part of a series of smooth performances by top players. Flipkens was one of two seeded women to lose, along with No. 29 Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakiaa. Hydro Flask Nz. Three seeded men exited during Mondays afternoon session: No. 11 Kei Nishikori, No. 27 Fernando Verdasco and No. 30 Ernests Gulbis. Sloane Stephens, a 20-year-old American seeded 15th, very nearly was on the list of losers, dropping the opening set, then trailing 4-2 in the third and 3-1 in the closing tiebreaker, before coming back to edge 110th-ranked Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Stephens heard plenty of support from the crowd, of course. She also picked out one particular voice in the stands that tried to remind her of at least one reason to be motivated. "Someone yelled to me, If you dont get it together, this lady is going to take your second round prize money! I was like, Oh, God," Stephens recounted. Shes one of a crop of young women from the U.S. seen as potential successors to the Williams sisters as tennis standard-bearers for the country; the 19 Americans in the main draw are the most at a Grand Slam tournament in seven years. By reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open in January, then the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, Stephens only increased expectations -- particularly when competing on home turf. "Theres more eyes on me," said Stephens, who is based in Coral Springs, Fla. "Just the whole being here at the U.S. Open is a bit overwhelming. Literally everywhere you go, every single person knows who you are, as opposed to when youre at the French Open or when youre at Wimbledon." Venus Williams has spent 1 1/2 decades in the spotlight, from the moment she showed up at Flushing Meadows in 1997 as a 17-year-old with white beads clackety-clacking in her braids and made it all the way to the title match. She won Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2001, then added three more titles at the All England Club in 2005, 2007 and 2008. The only other time Flipkens played Williams came during that stretch, in the 2007 Fed Cup, and the Belgian lost in straight sets then. "Today, I didnt feel a lot of difference between this match and that match," Flipkens said. She was particularly troubled by Williams serving and returning. As is her wont, Williams stepped inside the baseline to receive second serves, putting pressure on Flipkens, who double-faulted six times. Wearing a black dress with a colorful flower print, and fuchsia-colored braids tied in a bun, Williams needed all of 13 minutes to wrest control, taking 16 of the opening 21 points. Williams power-based game was only occasionally bothered by Flipkens slices. There were bumpy patches early in the second set, when Williams faced a total of eight break points, but she saved seven. At 2-all, Williams faced the last significant test, a 16-point, 12-minute game with three break chances for Flipkens that were erased this way: 113 mph ace, 115 mph service winner, 116 mph serve that set up an errant forehand. As that shot from Flipkens sailed long, Williams shouted, "Come on!" Williams won the next point, a 15-stroke exchange, with a volley winner and shook her left fist. On a day that began with a retirement announcement by James Blake -- a former top-five player who also is 33 -- Williams showed shes still capable of big shots at big moments. "I realize that I havent had a lot of chances to play this year or a lot of chances to play healthy this year, have had injuries and what have you, so Im just going to have to keep working my way into it, maybe more than some of the other players," she said. "But I know I can do that." Montreals Eugenie Bouchard and Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., won their matches to advance to the second round. Bouchard downed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to win in her U.S. Open main draw debut. Dancevic, meanwhile, defeated Robin Haase of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7). Earlier in the day, Torontos Sharon Fichman lost to Romanias Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. ' ' '

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Dirk Nowitzki Jersey . -- Down by 25 in the second quarter, the Indiana Pacers still had plenty of time. "We needed a little reminder of what we are playing for here," coach Frank Vogel said. The Pacers responded with one of the most impressive comebacks of the NBA season, catching the Detroit Pistons in the fourth quarter and eventually pulling away in overtime for a 112-104 victory Saturday night. Indiana leads Miami by 3 1/2 games in the race for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Paul George had 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Pacers. "We knew this was going to be a long game," George said. "We knew we had a chance to come back and we just had to take small steps. We had to chip away and get this win." Josh Smith scored 23 points for the Pistons, who lost star centre Andre Drummond in the first quarter to a neck injury. Drummond was able to walk off with some assistance and was a bit sore after the game. "Just a little bit of a scare," Drummond said. "Its hard for me to make moves left and right sometimes, but it shouldnt be anything that should stop me from the next few days." Evan Turner added 20 points for the Pacers, and David West scored six of his 15 points in overtime. Detroit led 56-31 in the second quarter but couldnt hold on. The Pistons trail Atlanta by five games for the final playoff spot in the East. It was the second-biggest comeback victory in the NBA this season, according to STATS. Golden State rallied from 27 down against Toronto on Dec. 3. "Really proud of our guys," Vogel said. "I did not like the deficit we built especially in that first half, but we stayed with the game and came back with better energy." Drummond, Detroits promising second-year centre, left with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter. He appeared to be hit in the head inadvertently by the Pacers Roy Hibbert during a scramble near the basket. "I got my hand on the ball and the ball rolled between my legs," Drummond said. "I reached down and came up and I ended up, my head hit Roy Hibbert in his thigh and sent a shock throughout my whole body." Drummond stayed down through an entire timeout. A stretcher was eventually brought onto the court, but he was able to get up and walk off toward the tunnel. Even without him, Detroit dominated the first half. A putback dunk by Jonas Jerebko pushed the lead to 25, and it was 60-41 at halftime. The Pacers started the second half with eight straight points, and George scored 14 points in the third quarter. Detroit led 79-73 after three. It was tied at 83 when Smith put Detroit back ahead with a layup. Then Detroits Greg Monroe and Indianas Luis Scola became entangled, leading to a brief skirmish and technical fouls on both players. A three-point play by Turner put Indiana ahead, but the Pacers couldnt shake the Pistons, and George missed a jumper from the left elbow that could have won the game at the end of regulation. "I thought we had a good stand at the end," Detroit interim coach John Loyer said. "They put it in their best players hands. I thought we did a pretty good job contesting the shot." It was 100-all heading into overtime. With Indiana up 104-102, West made a couple jumpers to give the Pacers a six-point lead. "In the overtime we just tried to get good quality looks," West said. "We didnt want to turn the ball over and we just wanted to make sure we got quality looks at the rim." NOTES: It was Indianas 17th victory of the season when trailing at halftime. ... Andrew Bynum scored 15 points with nine rebounds in 20 minutes for the Pacers. ... Detroit came into the game averaging an NBA-best 52.7 points in the paint. Indiana was allowing an NBA-low 35.4. Both teams ended up with 46 on Saturday. Steve Nash Jersey . -- Raiders wide receiver Jacoby Ford made it through a third straight practice without any setbacks and expects to play in Oaklands regular-season finale against San Diego. Fabio Fognini pulled off a surprise 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory over two-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray to level the best-of-five quarterfinal at 2-2 before Andreas Seppi defeated James Ward 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the decisive match.MELBOURNE, Australia - Victoria Azarenka is packing her bags and leaving the Australian Open far earlier than years past, but the two-time former champion sure had fun while she was here. For the Belarussian, who is putting forth a more carefree image these days, this might be just as important as winning.Unseeded after an injury-marred season, Azarenka had the toughest draw of any of the top female contenders at Melbourne Park, yet she moved through three rounds with ease, not dropping a set to Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki or Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. On Monday, though, her run came to an end against 2014 finalist, Dominika Cibulkova, in a match filled with extended rallies, momentum shifts and impressive shot-making. The two women combined for 76 winners. It was Azarenkas earliest exit from the Australian Open since 2011, but rather than be disappointed, she looked at the upside.I take it as progress. I think there are a lot of the positive things to take from here, she said. Overall, I can be pretty happy. Its been her mantra for the whole tournament. In years past, Azarenka hasnt seemed to fully enjoy her time at the Australian Open, despite her success. This year felt different — she seemed to buy into the tournaments informal Happy Slam nickname.Forget the twirls — Azarenka put on impromptu dance performances on the court after her matches. She playfully scolded the crowds for calling her Vicky instead of Vika or Victoria when they cheered her on. And she flirted with Australian teen sensation Nick Kyrgios on Twitter — she asked how she could learn to serve as big as him, and he responded, private lessons, of course!!Even her encounters with the media, which used to cause her to bristle in the past, were lighthearted. Custom Dallas Mavericks Jerseys. The topic of conversation routinely veered from tennis to other less weighty subjects, such as Vegemite and her multi-colored leggings.Theres not many players who can pull that off, she said after her third-round win over Zahlavova Strycova as she raised her leg to show off her white, purple and green leggings. What do you think about them?Azarenka also opened up about the pressures she felt in the past to publicly present a more packaged, less authentic version of herself. This came to a head at the Australian Open two years ago when she struggled to explain herself and looked overwhelmed when repeatedly questioned about a medical time-out she took at a critical time in her semifinal against Stephens. The controversy hung over her final against Li Na, with some in the crowd booing her and mimicking her high-pitched grunting sounds.Azarenka maintains she was legitimately hurt and felt she was unfairly criticized at the time. Now, she says, she has learned the importance of being true to herself, even if not everybody likes her.I dont think Ive changed as a person. I think I grew as a person. I think Im able to speak my thoughts more freely, which before I think I was holding back and really was trying to fit into some kind of image that a lot of people, a lot of players do, she said.Im just being me. I say what I want to say. I laugh when I want to laugh. I play how I want to play. I grunt when I want to grunt. ' ' '

This is a great time of year to be thankful for what we have Jahleel Addae Color Rush Jersey , where we have been, and what the future holds. Although the Chargers have lost their way a bit in recent years, the month of December still holds such incredible promise! This advent calendar is an attempt to hearken back to these days of December joy. Each day will bring a new advent from the Bolts’ history that makes it wonderful to be a Chargers fan.Dec. 11: A New Football PalaceThe Chargers certainly ruffled some feathers when they decided to “ditch the Q” and head up north for greener pastures that aren’t yet built. While they currently reside in StubHub Center, all of the team’s moves have been made with an eye on the NFL’s gem-to-be: Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park (Inglewood Stadium is the typical short-form).What could lure a team to an uncertain field?Possibilities (and not having to build a stadium themselves). The Chargers, while tenants in the stadium being designed around and directly for the Rams, believe that there are incredible upsides to playing in a stadium that looks to put JerryWorld to shame.NBC Los AngelesThe project will include the stadium of up to 100,240 seats (including standing room-only seats) and a performance entertainment venue of up to 6,000 seats. All the while re-configuring the previously approved Hollywood Park plan for up to 900,000 square feet of retail, 800,000 square feet of office space, 2,500 new residential and condo units Russell Okung Color Rush Jersey , a 300-room luxury hotel, and 25 acres of public parks, playgrounds, open space, a lake and pedestrian, bicycle, and mass-transit access for future services. It’s almost as if a stadium is the second or third bullet on the list! Michael Marchesano, vice president of field operations for the stadium, recently met with Mike Waldner of The Daily Breeze:Woh-oh, they’re half way there!According to ABC, there are about 3,000 people working on the stadium daily. That’s an incredible amount of manpower, and that’s exactly what it will take to have the stadium finished for the 2020 season. The 2023 Super Bowl is scheduled to arrive at the stadium (as will the college football championship game) Junior Seau Color Rush Jersey , and the Olympics not far after that in 2028.When that date arrives, it will be more than the Rams or the Chargers’ pride on the line, this stadium complex will represent the United States as a whole! An early aerial rendering of the complexNBC LAMore bells and whistles are rumored each coming week regarding the facility, and it is clear that the project is still very much a moving and evolving thing. One thing is for certain: when fans finally arrive at Hollywood Park, they will experience a stadium the likes of which the world has never seen.-Jason “I still prefer the Murph” Michaels Your daily dose of Los Angeles Chargers news & notes from around the web."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections San Diego Chargers Daily LinksSan Diego Chargers NewsSan Diego Chargers OffseasonSan Diego Chargers HistorySan Diego Chargers HumorChargers Daily LinksLos Angeles Chargers Daily Links: Can Thomas Davis be an impact player?New,51commentsYour daily dose of Los Angeles Chargers news & notes from around the web.PDTShareTweetShareShareLos Angeles Chargers Daily Links: Can Thomas Davis be an impact player?Kirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsOne stat to know on every team's highest-graded free agency signing - Mark ChichesterAmong the 41 linebackers in the PFF era with at least 100 snaps as a pure pass-rusher (as opposed to their snaps from blitzes), Thomas Davis‘ pass-rush win rate of 25.4% and his pressure rate of 29.5% both rank first.Ranking the top-five draft-eligible interior defensive linemen by pressure percentage in 2018 - Austin GayleNotre Dame’s Jerry Tillery is a long, athletic specimen that tied for first with Williams in pass-rush grade (92.5) and tied for fourth with the next guy on this list in pressure percentage (12.2%). Williams“I feel like I still have a lot left in the tank,” Davis said. “I am one of the more athletic linebackers in this league. I feel like [with] the wisdom and knowledge of the game that I have been able to learn from a bunch of veteran guys over the years, I can really help some of the younger guys on this defense. Just whatever I can add and whatever I can bring, I am willing to do and just come in and be the ultimate teammate.”The Chargers should wait until the 2020 Draft for a quarterback - Jason GilderAfter those two, quarterbacks such as Duke’s Daniel Jones, Missouri’s Drew Lock, and North Carolina State’s Ryan Findlay could all be first-rounders. One of them could be available when the Bolts are on the clock. The Texans traded for Demaryius Thomas earlier this year to replace Will Fuller V. Today they lost their second wide receiver who replaced their second wide receiver for the rest of the season. The Texans ran that quick screen pass to the left sideline that they love to run. Thomas cut back to block when he went down. He tried to get up and walk http://www.texansfanshop.com/Kahale-Warring-Jersey , but instead fell right back down grasping his left leg. The trainers came on the field. He was carted off. Now the reports are trickling out that Thomas did in fact tear his Achilles tendon. This will be a season ending injury. The Texans will look to replace him with a combination of Vyncint Smith, DeAndre Carter, and whoever they can find on the waiver wire. They may bring back Sammie Coates. Now more than every they need Keke Coutee’s hamstring to heal itself. Until then we’ll just have to wait and see what the team does as they try to replace Thomas in preparation for the 2018 postseason. Whether you are a fan of football or badminton, you ideally want to see the best play the best.Any opportunity to do so garners your attention. For badminton fans, the BWF World Championships or the Olympics are the best case scenario. Fortunately for football fans, elite talent squares off on a weekly basis, and the next iteration of talented players facing off against one another will be in the Texans-Redskins game on Sunday. 2017 All-Pro WR DeAndre Hopkins will likely be covered by 2015 All-Pro Josh Norman. The two NFL stars both grew up in South Carolina; their high schools are about an hour away from each other. Norman went to Greenwood High School and actually played alongside current running mate D.J. Swearinger. Together, Swearinger and Norman won a state title in 2006. The one and only time Nuk and Norman have faced off against each other was back in 2015 when Ryan Mallett was the future of the Texans’ franchise and Norman played for the Carolina Panthers. Neither of those situations lasted very long; Norman left Carolina after the season to cash in with the Redskins after his only All-Pro campaign. It was not certain at the time, but Carolina was about to go on a 14-game winning streak and all the way to the Super Bowl. But for this Week 2 match up, the main focus was on budding star in DeAndre Hopkins against the league’s best corner. If you can remember in the not-so-distant past, the Texans struggled to do that thing where one player named the quarterback did a neat trick where he moves his arm at a funny angle and an inflated pig’s bladder they call a football is lofted into the air and - supposedly - lands in the should-be-illegal-because-they-are-so-sticky gloves of his intended target. Back in 2015 Max Scharping Jersey , this was an undiscovered treasure trove of potential first downs for the Texans.I had a chance to take advantage of my NFL Game Pass subscription and re-watch the Texans-Panthers game from 2015. The first thing that popped in the film was that Josh Norman plays with zero fear. Lined up one foot from the line of scrimmage, Norman played press coverage like it was nobody’s business. Take a look at the first catch of the day for Hopkins.3rd and 10 from the Texans 22A pretty simple concept executed by the Texans here. Hopkins is on an option route with Norman shaded outside in a Cover 3 zone with two linebackers underneath the zone. The option part of the route is predicated on whether Norman keeps his outside leverage throughout the entire length of the route. As Hopkins sprints towards the first down marker, he reads and reacts to Norman pressing him at the top of the route. At this point, Norman has cut off Hopkins; he knows the goal of the route is to get the first down. However, Norman just barely turns his hips away from his original outside leverage stance, which allows Hopkins to cut against the coverage and get open for a first down. The second pass I'll show is a bit more indicative of how the rest of the game went for these two stars. Mallett was having a hard time finding D-Hop, and that is because Hopkins’ route tree was not fully developed yet.Norman was able to condense the number of routes he had to predictably cover. On this first and 10 play, Watson is the X receiver in the formation facing Cover 3 man. The Panthers are disguising their coverage as a Cover 2 with two safeties, but they bail the top safety out and bring the bottom safety closer to the line of scrimmage in the box. Norman wins battle for deep ballAt the snap, Hopkins takes too long to get off the line of scrimmage and is forced to detour to get over the top of a stacked Norman. Then, without the normal momentum that he should have been leading with http://www.texansfanshop.com/Lonnie-Johnson-Jersey , Nuk peels out to get Norman to bite on the short route and again breaks away from the cornerback. Because of the slow start, the effects of the fake out route are diminished, which allow Norman to hand battle with Hopkins for 35 yards downfield until Mallett over throws him. At this point, the ball is directly over the head of Hopkins as he extends his right arm to separate from Norman. The hand fighting and slow progression into the route forced Mallett to overthrow Hopkins instead of Hopkins being there on time. Norman won this play and many more this game - only allowing two receptions for 24 yards... as he proudly boasted in 2015 on Twitter:There should be some real hype around this match-up on Sunday that I have seen. Although Norman is not at the peak of his career, he is still a major contributor to Washington’s defense and had an interception last week. Both players look to be different since they last met. Hopkins has turned into one of the best receivers and runs smoother routes. Norman plays more off-man coverage and will sink into zone schemes for the Redskins more often. From scouting Washington’s coverage tendencies and watching how Norman previously played Hopkins, I would not be surprised if the Texans stick Hopkins in the slot or at least in tight stacked twins sets with Keke Coutee on Sunday. Norman loves to play with outside leverage; he is one of the premiere corners at taking away half of the route tree and forcing a receiver to run inside to make contested catches. Putting Nuk in the slot or motioning him into the slot takes away the leverage Norman plays with and forces the Redskins into uncomfortable match-ups. Another thing—from watching the highlights of the Redskins-Buccaneers game last week, the Redskins’ defense either overly respected Ryan Fitzpatrick’s arm, the downfield threat of DeSean Jackson and Mike Evans, or they were purposely trying to give the Bucs time to throw; they ran almost 100% soft man coverage instead of aggressively challenging the wide receivers at the line of scrimmage.A different looking Norman gives space to his receiversSunday will most likely put one of these two teams firmly ahead in the playoff race. Both teams are 6-3 and have relatively easy schedules moving forward. With the Titans gaining in the AFC South and the Cowboys/Eagles providing similar problems for the Redskins in the NFC East, a win in Week 10 would be a big stiff-arm in the division race. The Hopkins-Norman match-up may help decide which team is that much closer to making the NFL Playoffs. I predict that Hopkins has over 10 catches but not 100 yards. An onslaught of short to intermediate passes will be the game plan against the Redskins. If D-Hop gets in the end zone one on Sunday - a feat he has accomplished for four straight weeks - I would say that it’s a win for him over Norman.

My only real ground rule as I did this draft was that I decided not to use a pick on a quarterback in the early portions of the draft.Remember, this is a scenario. It’s understood that the draft won’t unfold exactly this way and that players will sometimes be available in spots where they shouldn’t be. The seventh round of this mock provides an example of something that is, truthfully, unlikely to happen. Still, the draft is inexact and unpredictable, so players will often be selected earlier or later than anticipated by the draft community.Round 1 (No. 6) — Quinnen Williams, DT, AlabamaWe have discussed this scenario. Didn’t matter who else was on the board. Williams fell here. There are some who believe Williams is the best player in the draft, and there was no way I was letting him get by. If this happens in the real draft, the Giants will feel like they won the lottery.Could Alabama DT Quinnen Williams fall to Giants at No. 6?Round 1 (No. 17) — Jonah Williams, OT, AlabamaPassed on: QBs Drew Lock and Daniel Jones Janoris Jenkins Color Rush Jersey , OT Cody Ford, CB Byron Murphy, Edge Clelin Ferrell There is more and more chatter that Williams could be the first tackle selected and could be off the board in the top 10. Here, he is still available at 17. I will happily plug him in at right tackle.Prospect Profile: Alabama OT Jonah Williams could solve a couple problems for the Giants’ offensive lineRound 2 (No. 37) — Nasir Adderley, S, DelawarePassed on: DL Jeffrey Simmons and Dexter Lawrence, CBs Justin Layne, Rock Ya-Sin and Amani Oruwayire, OL Chris LindstromA number of strong possibilities here. I will take the guy who could be the long-term answer at safety after learning from Antoine Bethea for a year. Easy to argue that one of the cornerbacks would also be a solid choice.Round 3 (No. 95) — Dawson Knox, TE, MississippiPerhaps the Giants will consider the idea of using Evan Engram more as a wide receiver. That would be one reason to make a pick like this. Another would simply be to potentially upgrade the inline duo of Rhett Ellison and Scott Simonson. Draft analyst Matt Waldman spoke highly of Knox on a recent ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast. Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst writes:The Giants might be in a position to give him that time.Prospect Profile: The Giants should consider Mississippi tight end Dawson Knox on Day 3Round 4 (No. 108) — JJ Arcega-Whiteside, WR, StanfordArcega-Whiteside is 6-foot-2, 225. He offers a body type and a skillset that could be a nice complement to the Giants smaller receivers. I will happily snag him here before the big middle of the draft run on receivers limits the choices.Prospect Profile: Stanford receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside isn’t flashy, but could be a stealRound 4 (No. 132) — Tytus Howard, OT, Alabama StateOdd spot in the draft here. The board I was staring at was filled with running backs and wide receivers. I didn’t want to go there. There wasn’t real value at positions of need like cornerback or center. Even though I already selected Williams in Round 1, I took Howard simply because he is a high-value Riley Dixon Color Rush Jersey , high-upside prospect who probably should have been off the board long before this pick.Prospect Profile: Alabama State OT Tytus Howard could be a potential gem for the GiantsRound 5 (No. 142) — Rodney Anderson, RB, OklahomaI’m still staring at a board filled with running backs and tight ends. The Giants could easily be looking for a back to compete with Wayne Gallman to backup Saquon Barkley, and Anderson offers size at 224 pounds and upside, albeit with a risky injury history. I will take the chance this deep into the draft.Round 5 (No. 143) — Kingsley Keke, DL, Texas A&MAs with the last two picks, I’m staring at a board filled with running backs and tight ends. No desire to go in those directions. The Giants need to add depth to their defensive line rotation. That’s what I try to do here. Weirdly, Keke is the 142nd ranked player on the board, taken with the 143rd pick.Round 5 (No. 171) — Brett Rypien, QB, Boise StateMan, what is it with this Draft Network board? The first six players to choose from here are wide receivers. Eight of the first 10 are wide receivers. The other two? Running backs, of course. This turns into a nod to Mark Schofield and Matt Waldman, big Rypien boosters who think he has a chance to outperform his Day 3 draft stock. Yeah, I know. Another mid- to late-round quarterback and you’re tired of the Giants taking those. I’ve got 12 picks, though, people. Cut me some slack!Scouting the Quarterbacks: What kind of NFL prospect is Brett Rypien?Round 6 (No. 180) — Travis Fulgham Mario Edwards Jr Color Rush Jersey , WR, ODUAlright, already! The top eight choices on the board here are wide receivers. I guess the Draft Gods are telling me to take one. I hope they’re happy now.Honestly, I do think the Giants will take a sixth- or seventh-round flier on a receiver. It might not be Fulgham, but on this board with the choices I have and the values the players are assigned he’s the guy I am going with.Round 7 (No. 232) — Austin Bryant, Edge, ClemsonOK, Draft Network folks, why is Bryant still available to me in Round 7 with the 232nd overall pick? He’s a guy who should come off the board in the middle rounds. Somehow or another, in a draft filled with edge rushers, this board never really presented me with proper value at that position. That — weirdly — gets fixed here.Round 7 (No. 245) — Montre Hartrage, CB, NorthwesternGotta pick somebody, right? Might as well be a player with some upside and special teams ability at a position of need.
